Continuing Education for Clergy:  Permanent Diaconate:  Past, Present and Future

September 21st, 2016 @ 9:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.

This session is arranged to provide an historical and theological overview of the diaconate as an Order of Ministry within the Church. The session will explain the connection between permanent diaconate and transitional diaconate. It will examine the uniqueness of diaconate and the potential of the permanent diaconate ministry to enhance and empower lay ministries.

The session will be of benefit to all clergy, and especially beneficial to pastors who may have or be interested in introducing diaconal ministries. It will be of interest and benefit to deacons, those interested and discerning a diaconal vocation, and those curious about the permanent diaconate for any reason.

  • 9:30 – 10:45 Rev. Dr. David Bell, PhD will present the historical and theological background of the diaconate as it was, as it is and how it can be.
  • 10:45 – 11:30 Panel Discussion of deacons and priests sharing their experiences of successes and challenges for diaconal ministry in the pastoral context.

The session will provide opportunity for discussion as well as a Question and Answer time.
